"Silver Bells", a Christmas Classic, Almost Had a Very Awkward Title

  • 'Silver Bells' is a true holiday classic by any definition - but the song might not have become nearly as famous if it kept its original title.
  • Songwriters Joe Livingston and Ray Evans wrote the song for the 1951 Bob Hope movie The Lemon Drop Kid - but in their original version, it was titled "Tinkle Bells".
  • As the story goes, it was Livingston's wife who convinced them to change it, exclaiming "Are you out of your mind? Do you know what ‘tinkle’ means to most people?”
  • The original lyrics of the song also include a verse about putting money in the collection kettle, sung by William Frawley in the movie.
  • See, guys? The wife is never wrong!
