Yesterday I was driving south on Route 9 in Fishkill. I was the lead car of the middle lane of the 3 lines of traffic that stopped at the red light at Merritt Boulevard. When the light turned green - 7 more cars came speeding through the red light making a left turn to go South on 9 right in front of us. If I, or any of the other drivers waiting for the light drove into the intersection when it turned green - there would have been a pile up.
The man in the car to my right blew his horn and shook his head. His face got red. It's not just that they beat the light, it's that in doing so they put other people in danger. I felt it. 7 CARS! Each driver making making the same decision to "go for it" one after the other! It really was something to witness.
We have all seen crazy on the roads lately. It's common for drivers to pass over the double yellow line. It's common for drivers to race up behind you and ride your bumper. It's common for people to weave in and out of traffic. It's common for people to be out of their minds...literally...not in touch with what they are doing... as they race to cut you off and grab each nanosecond of opportunity.
There's a whole lot we could talk about. The Earth is hotter than every before. The price of food is higher than ever before. Many are working harder than ever before. Anxiety and depression is as common as a sneeze. People are freaked out for a million reasons.
The face of the man in the car next to me became a beautiful example of what I did not want. I did not want to bring the energy of this incident home to the pets and people I love. In that nanosecond I made the choice to grab the opportunity to send love. As those 7 cars raced to jump on 1 - 84 I sent them peace. I let my heart talk to their heart and I said - "I hope you get home safely to the people you love. I hope you get home to your dog and your dinner. I hope you have a great night."
This is my new mantra. (Hello, Man in the Green Chevy Pickup who rode my bumper into work today!? Did you feel me wishing you well?)
Many people are not their best selves - on the road or off these day. Feel free to join me in my quest to send them love...peace and compassion. We may not be able to help people be more patient when they drive - but we can take responsibility for our own energy and not their crazy infect us.
In other words, I'm showing them two fingers now instead of one! :)
Sending love,
xo Kacey
