Yankees and Mets Set NY Subway Series for 9/11 25th Anniversary

Nearly a quarter of a century later, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 still feels close—grief lingers, memories flash, and the weight of that day never truly fades.

10 days later as First Responders continued to comb through the wreckage of the World Trade Center twin towers' Ground Zero recovering victims, the New York Mets returned to Shea Stadium to play the Atlanta Braves.

They'd lose 3-2 but catcher Mike Piazza brought the crowd to its feet hitting the city's first post 9/11 homerun, bringing both tears and smiles to the faces of the fans in attendance.

That September 25th, over in the Bronx, the Yankees would return to their stadium to resume their 2001 season.

So, on September 11, 2026, in observance of the monumental anniversary, the Yankees and Mets will compete in another Subway Series. According to Sports Illustrated and SNY Mets, the games will be played at Yankee Stadium.
