Sometimes we use self-checkout when we're only purchasing a few items. Sometime we check ourselves out because the store lines with cashiers are full. And, I'll admit it, sometime I use self-checkout because it's fun and reminds me of playing 'Grocery Store' as a kid (even though I'm bad at it and half my crap never scans, lol).
But when you get down to it, shoppers who choose self-service checkout kiosks are doing a job. So, should we be getting a discount on our purchases for putting in the work ourselves?
Well, there's currently proposed legislation called Bill A11501 currently with the New York State Assembly that would require food retailers to give customersa 10 percent discount for using self-checkout. The bill was crafted to address the burgeoning use of self-checkout and the impact itcanmight have on traditional cashiering positions. Basically, if a store can have fewer employees to pay they can pass the savings on to the shopper and it becomes a win-win for both.
New York Assembly Bill A11501 has to be passed by state Legislature and become law before shoppers would reep any benefits, according to New York Post.
Self-checkout is convenient (for the most part) but not necessary as long as a store still employees cashiers. And if every shopper who opts the scan their own items for the discount of it all, would stores move to take away the option so as not to hurt their bottom line? Would a conversion to ONLY self-checkout put jobs in jeopardy? Simple topic with lots to consider.
