December Offers 5 Amazing Celestial Events

Can you even believe it's the LAST month of the year? We've officially flipped the calendar to December and 2025 is almost over but not before we get to witness five amazing celestial events in the night sky.

It all starts with this year's last Supermoon the first week of the month. We've also got two meteor showers and a comet to look forward to. Check out December's important astronomical dates below.

The Cold Supermoon will reportedly not only rise higher than any Full Moon of 2025, but higher than any in the sky until 2042, according to thetrillionairelife/Instagram. You can witness its peak brilliancy just after sunset on Thursday, December 4th looking slightly bigger, brighter, and closer than other this year.

This December's Geminid Meteor Shower is projected to be much more visible to the naked eye because of the darker, nighttime sky this time of year. Astronomers predict up to 120 shooting stars per hour.

We put Fall 2025 behind us and move onto the Winter Season on December 21st. Although it will mean the coming of colder temps and likely more snow for The Hudson Valley, the arrival of the Winter Solstice (the shortest day and longest night of the year) means one minute more sunshine every day after.

The Ursid Meteor Shower will be small and short but dazzling, and coincide with the Winter Solstice. Viewing should be optimal since it will occur during a New Moon cycle.

Comet 3I/Atlas makes it's closest approach to Earth this month, offering scientists an opportunity to study an object from another star system that's reportedly between 7-14 billion years old, according to Galaxies/Instagram. Yes, BILLION.
