West Point Cadet Helps Save Man from Burning Car in Fort Montgomery

A second-year cadet at The U.S. Military Academy in West Point is receiving a ton of praise for helping to save a man from a burning vehicle in Fort Montgomery.

It was Saturday night in the middle of Labor Day Weekend when Larry Pickens, Jr. and his father Larry Pickens, Sr. came upon a vehicle that was on fire, according to Yahoo! News. What they found inside was a man who was unconscious. The West Point cadet and his dad reportedly did not hesitate to offer assistance, pulling the man from the car just moments before it became fully engulfed in flames.

According to Fort Montgomery Fire Department, the vehicle hit a utility pole on Route 9W, bringing down power lines in the process.

Video from the horrific event, posted to YouTube by BlackKnight Nation can be seen below.

Speaking with ABC 11, Pickens, Sr. said his son's training at the academy were evident during the rescue. 'He mentioned his military training kicked in, and we pulled the man out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there, and then the fire department got there shortly after.'

West Point formally recognized Pickens, Jr.'s bravery on their official social media sites stating, 'USMA is proud of the heroic actions taken 'Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr'.' The post goes on to say, 'Running towards danger to save lives is the embodiment of the Army Values and Warrior Ethos.'

In addition to being a cadet at the prestigious West Point Academy, Larry Pickens, Jr. is also reportedly a member of the Army Black Knights football team who just began their season the night before the accident where he essentially became a hero in his community.

Thank you, Larry and Mr. Pickens, Sr. for your bravery!
