One mode of transportation in The Hudson Valley might have sailed its last sunset.
According to Mid Hudson News, service on the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry, which links commuters to the Beacon Train Station (and Manhattan's Grand Central Station) from the Newburgh Waterfront, has been suspended, maybe permanently.
The decision to discontinue rides on the ferry was made Tuesday by New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), angering local legislators like Congressman Pat Ryan (D, NY-18) who hope get it running again. He's even holding a 'Save the Ferry' rally Tuesday night.
Ryan feels the move is an example of The Hudson Valley getting nothing in return for contributing to a New York City-centric transportation system. Ryan tells Mid Hudson News that he's already written a letter of disgust to the head of the MTA alluding to a betrayal of the public's trust and wasting tax-payer dollars.
So, what do you do now if you're a frequent rider on the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry?
According to MTA.info, buses will be replacing ferry service until further notice. You can view that bus schedule here.
As for the future of the ferry, that remains unknown for the time being.
