True story……someone I know contacted a regional wildlife rehabilitation center because they had noticed that the swan that resides in the neighborhood pond was no longer floating freely and was frozen in the ice due to the brutal weather we’ve been having this week. Being very concerned about the swan’s health, they contacted the rehab place who asked that they send photos, so this concerned citizen drove back to the pond in the bitter cold and snapped several pictures of the swan, seemingly in distress! One of said photos is seen above! While they waited for the animal rescue people to call back, they were explaining their concern about the swan’s predicament to a neighbor, and was shocked and chagrinned to learn that their town had installed a fake swan a while back to scare geese away from the pond!
There was of course tremendous embarrassment over not knowing that a non-living swan that had been deployed and they called the rehab place to call off the rescue and all involved could only laugh at the honest mistake
My suggestion is to write “FAKE” on both sides of this decoy swan since most, if not all geese can’t read. Except for the Canada geese, who are of course brilliant and usually very funny too… as are just about every other Canadian I now.
As funny as this is to all of us, it really speaks volumes about this person’s concern for local wildlife plus their willingness to go the extra mile to make phone calls and take multiple photos!
Be like them even if sometimes you end up with (goose) egg on your face! #Commendable
