Meet the WHUD DJs – Tom Furci

Hi there, Hudson Valley! Thanks for listening to 100.7 WHUD at work, in the car or at home. Just so you know a little bit about me, I was born in Brooklyn , NY and raised on Long Island . After attending St. John’s University , I began my radio journey at WALL AM/FM in Middletown , NY . From there, I worked behind the scenes in the copy department and traffic department at WOR radio. After that, I took a break from radio and worked in TV for awhile at HBO. However, I missed radio. So, I returned to the air waves full time in 1983 at WVIP AM/FM in Mount Kisco , NY , where I worked every air shift imaginable, though the majority of my air time was either Middays and Afternoons. Not one to have just one job (ever!), I also manage the copy and production department, as well as handling Programming and Music Director duties. In 1993, I joined the WHUD family as the host of the Midday show, originally from 9 AM to 2 PM, but now beginning at 10 AM. It’s been an incredibly fun time here, with the Office of the Day phone calls I’ve made, plus my favorite hour of the day, the All Request Lunch Hour from 12 to 1 PM. I’ve also had the chance to produce special programming for the station, including WHUD’s Top 100.7 Songs of the Year, and all of our holiday weekend specials too. In 1997, I was named as WHUD’s Music Director. In February 2000, I received my first industry award at the Gavin Convention in San Francisco . I was named Music Director/Assistant Program Director of the Year for Secondary Markets. Since then, I’ve won two MORE Gavin Awards (for a three-peat!), and was VERY proud to also pick up WHUD’s Station of the Year Award in 2002 as well! And in 2003, I was lucky to win the Billboard Award as Music Director of the Year. In 2007, FMBQ, another industry newsmagazine, awarded me with a lifetime achievement award. I have also received previous nominations from Radio and Records, the other premier radio industry newspaper; and locally, a New York City Air Award Nomination for Best Midday show.

Also, in July 2000, with WHUD’s help, I began my journey into Syndicated Programming with “MAGIC OF THE 80’s”, a two hour show dedicated to the best music of that decade. Since its’ debut on WHUD, MOT80’s has grown, and can now be heard on stations across the country! I’m on stations in Hawaii , Maine , Vermont , Pennsylvania , Delaware and Michigan . In 2010, our Michael Jackson tribute special won an Award of Distinction from “The Communicator”. Maybe you’ll have some time to listen on a Sunday mornings from 9 to 11 on WHUD!

As they say, the world gets smaller as you get older! I’ve worked with most of the WHUD staff at other radio stations, including Andy Bale, Linda Francese, Jim McCannon, Bruce Owens, and Jed Taylor – all long-time friends! I enjoy reading mystery novels, watching baseball, bowling, board games, spending time with my family and friends, and naturally, listening to (and collecting) music!! Thanks for checking us out, and drop me an e-mail sometime!
