Pinkster In Sleepy Hollow
Dining on traditional African cuisine and enjoying music, dancing, and dramatic vignettes are highlights for visitors to Discover Pinkster! at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, NY, Sunday, May 19, from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Inspired by the grand cross-cultural springtime celebrations jointly created by Dutch settlers and enslaved Africans during colonial times, Philipsburg Manor’s Discover Pinkster! is a rousing re-creation. For the African community riven by enslavement, it was a profound opportunity for family members and friends, many of whom were split off and spread out from each other, to come together. Discover Pinkster! Dancing, drumming, African folktales, and cooking demonstrations. Musical performers include a roaming fiddler and a player of the kora, which is a traditional West African instrument. African drumming and dance demonstrations will be led by Maxwell Kofi Donkor, a Ghanaian native and reno...

Iona Island; Forgotten History
Visable from many points on the Hudson River, including the Bear Mountain Bridge, Iona Island is full of mystery and forgotten history.
Doc Bayne, historian, photographer and educator, presents the forgotten history of Iona Island, from the living of Native Americans on the island, through the colonial farms and settlements, when it was known as Salisbury Island, and later as Weygant's Island. In the late 1800s it attracted tourists with an amusement park, hotel, and picnic grounds.
From 1900 to 1946 Iona became a top secret naval arsenal complete with explosions, saboteurs and of course, the famous WWII Mothball Fleet. In 1965 the Palisades Interstate Park Commission took possession, making most of the island and surrounding marshes a wildlife preserve, providing valuable habitat for many species, including winter nesting for Bald Eagles.
Learn the history and uncover the mystery of Iona Island, Sunday, May 19th. Museum opens at 2pm, program starts at 2:15pm.The public is invite...

Give Red For Ed In Putnam Valley
Members of the Putnam Valley High School National Honor Society plan to carry on the ‘giving spirit’ of their much loved Social Studies teacher, Ed Schmitt, who passed away in February 2012 after a long battle with leukemia. The students will host their third blood drive, titled Give Red for Ed in conjunction with New York Blood Center on Friday, May 24, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM at Putnam Valley High School, 142 Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley. For years, Ed Schmitt organized the blood drives at his school and encouraged both students and faculty to donate. Throughout his 11-year battle, Ed received many transfusions. While out on extended medical leave, students rallied to host a blood drive to show support, beginning the Give Red for Ed blood drive tradition. That first drive brought in 133 lifesaving units of blood, a record for the school. Last year’s drive brought in 106 units, and they are looking to continue their success and raise awareness of the need for blood. Many ...

Can You Fight Poverty With A Five-Star Hotel?
Is the International Finance Coporation (IFC), the World Bank’s investment arm, an experiment run amok? Do billionaires and massive multinational corporations really need help from the World Bank and do their projects support or detract from the World Bank’s purpose? Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, financial journalist, and adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, addresses these questions as she speaks about her investigation into the IFC’s chosen investments. Although the IFC’s mission is to create opporunity for people to escape poverty and improve their lives, the IFC appears to be more in the business of giving loans to billionaires and massive multinational corporations to finance projects that do not help the needy. As Einhorn explains, the IFC has been financing luxury hotels and high end shopping malls in poverty-stricken areas such as Ghana, and supporting gold and copper mines and oil pipelines to benefit primarily the corrupt authoritarian regimes that control them in Came...

Parallel Lives*
The Armonk Players Present
PARALLEL LIVES The Hilarious comedy by Mo Gaffney & Kathy Najimy. In the opening scene, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world with the relish of two slightly sadistic suburban wives decorating a living room. Afraid women will have too many advantages, the Beings decide to make childbirth painful and to give men enormous egos as compensation. The audience is whisked through the outrageous sketches where a dozen, or so, actresses play men and women struggling through the common rituals of modern life. This is a humurous show that pokes fun at women and is also thought provoking. It looks at the human condition from a feminist perspective, It deals with gender issues and women's choices, but this is a man-friendly show. With boundless humor, PARALLEL LIVES reexamines the ongoing ques...
