Hi Friends -
Mike Grean, my fiance, and I were walking down Main Street in Cold Spring the other day when Highland Baskets owner, Leonora, and her husband Tony shouted, " When's the wedding?"
"July 8th," I called back, and we erputed into an impromtu sidewalk chorus of "pull out the stopper, we'll have a popper - get me to the church on time!"
Among the sweet memories I'm collecting at this time I must include the students at Our Montessori School in Yorktown where I teach theatre art workshops. In my youngest group, the 5 and 6 year-olds, a girl declared, " I heard on the RADIO that you are getting MARRIED." I said, "Yes, I am. It's very exciting". With that, a little boy raises his hand. "Excuse me...Miss Kacey... if you have a wedding cake, and it's chocolate, could you save some for us?" I can't even TYPE that story without filling up with tears of joy.
It's been a roller coaster of feelings these past few months and through it all, there were only TWO things I was SURE of. One is, that I am marrying a wonderful man. Micheal Grean Jr. grew up in Rye working in two of his family's businesses; construction and cooking. If you remember the huge sign for the White Elephant piano bar, it is now hanging over my fireplace. Mike spent 15 years in California, most recently as a movie caterer for films like Walk the Line and Memoirs of a Geisha. A film job brought him back the beautiful East Coast where he was inspired to take of his apron, pick up a hammer and began Grean Contracting Inc.
I had signed up for a 3 month core training course with Loretta Reiley at Scivoletto
Chiropractic in Cortlandt. At each visist Loretta would say, "You should meet the man who is building my house." Finally, I said, "Give him my number!" She did. We had a blind date on July 9, 2006 at Riverview in Cold Spring. We are getting married on July 8, 2008.
The exchange of vows will be private, under the family grapevines on what would have been my father's birthday. That was just one of Mike's very good ideas.
The PARTY is July 19 at the Bird and Bottle Inn in Garrison.
I got my dress for that event at La Petite Boutique in Pleasantville. A few weeks ago, after driving my niece to voice lessons at the Lighthouse Theatre, my sister and I stopped in the shop known for the monochromatic window displays and started trying things on. I can't remember if it was Rosalee or Georgia, but one of the ladies there passed a simple satin slip dress over the swinging door of the dressing room. Just like when you meet THE guy - when you find THE dress, you KNOW!
We went back another day and got dresses for the rest of the party. My niece, Haley Jane is my Maid of Honor. Haley turns 16 the day after the wedding. My sister Maria, Haley's Mom, is the Matron of Honor. My flower girl and cousin, Kirstie Levine, is 38 and 8 months pregnant. I was her Mom's flower girl. Her Mom was my Mom's flower girl. There's a lot of love in this family tradition. Kirstie's son and daughter, Paige and Jake, will round out the bridal party as flower child and ring bearer.
A few years ago, I was spending a day with my nephews Nicky and Jake. The outspoken one said "When are you getting married? Ya, know... you're old enough." The quieter nephew spoke up. "JAKE! What are you talking about?! She can't just marry ANYBODY! I mean, what if she marries some GUY and then we find out he doesn't like KIDS??!" That was a defining moment in my single life. I knew then that if I never found "the one" I still had more love than I could ever ask for from these two young men. In the past 2 years Mike has built them a half pipe for their skate boarding, taken them golfing and signed on to coach both their hockey teams. When they visit, Mike fills the 'fridge with their favorite food. Sleep overs find they 3 of them up too late cracking up over silly movies. Jake and Nicky are Mike's Best Men. That handsome trio will be in Tux attire for the soiree on the 19th while the ladies will be a shimmering symphony of gold, champagne and cocoa - those are our colors. There will be accents of deep blues and purples as Robert from Cold Spring Gardens will adorn the tables with sweet bowls of grapes to carry over the theme from the setting of our vows.
Growing up I dreamed I'd marry a Giovanni Mastropoloabruzazi and HYPHENATE it with Morabito...but today, changing my name feels like a fun option. Mike is my family of choice. I'll celebrate that. Who I am is constantly changing, but I remain Mo's daughter, Maria's sister and now, Mike's wife. Kacey Grean. That's GREE ON - as in - the husband we can all agree on! Mike says I'm in for a lifeime of people calling me Kacey GREEN - but I'd don't mind going green or Grean.
Every since we announced my engagement on the air, I've been collecting notes, cards and e-mails I've received from YOU WHUD listeners in a red velvet hat box at home. That is the SECOND thing I was sure of from the start. When Mike and I exchange our marriage vows under the grapevines, that box will be with us. Mike has known since I met him that being part of the team that wakes up so much of Westchester and the Hudson Valley is one of my greatest joys. And the only reason I cut our dates short is for that 4:20 AM alarm clock, so I don't miss my daily date with you.
Thank You - for being part of this magical journey.
Love,
Kacey
